Aelred"Ted" Edward   Lowney
Chicopee, MA -- Aelred Edward ‘Ted’ Lowney, 91, died on Sunday May 14, 2017 at home in Chicopee, Massachusetts. He was born on Feb. 4, 1926, in Kings Park, New York, to the late John and Nora (Lyons) Lowney. He grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he attended New Bedford High School, leaving high school in 1944 to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the armed guard until 1946 as a gunner on a merchant ship, traveling to Naples, Italy, and Hawaii, where he recalled “we raised holy hell” after the war was officially declared over on Sept. 2, 1945. He also served in the Philippines, ending his tour in San Francisco. After his honorable discharge, he completed high school at the Newman Preparatory School in Boston, and earned a bachelor degree in textile engineering from the former New Bedford Textile Institute, now the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He also played football there. In 1951 he married the love of his life, Shirley MacLeod Lowney, raising six children together, for many years in Enfield, Conn. He worked at Pratt & Whitney, now United Technologies, and Combustion Engineering, retiring in 1988 and enjoying many years with family at his summer cottage in Fairhaven, Mass., and on board a number of sailboats that he owned. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus Council 50 in Enfield, Conn where he was Past Grand Knights, former permittee and was on various committees and has many friends. He was known and loved by many and will be remembered as fearless, fun, and loyal. He was pre-deceased by his sister Dorothy Reynolds and brothers John P. and Paul J. Lowney. In addition to his widow, he leaves six children Kathleen Lowney Abdalla (Nazem), Mary Ellen Lowney (Sean Cahillane), Margaret Lowney (Thomas Montrueil), Melanie Lowney Denver (Russell), Timothy Lowney (Beverly Kibbe), Patrick Lowney (Sandra), 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, a sister, Jo-Ann Lowney (Joel Coplin), and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Thurs May 18, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield, Conn. Funeral services will be held on Friday May 19, 2017 with the funeral procession forming at 9:00 a.m. to St. Martha Church 214 Brainard Rd. Enfield for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 50 Bldg. Fund,
